Self-Compassion is a Superpower

Dr. Ashley Smith, Licensed Psychologist and Co-founder of Peak Mind

Self-compassion is a psychological superpower and is an excellent thing to tap into during difficult or painful moments. One way to do this is to take a self-compassion break (SCB). A SCB has 3 parts:

  1. Mindfulness
  2. Connecting with common humanity
  3. Self-kindness

Start by closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths. Then be mindful of your current experience. What thoughts, emotions, and sensations are arising as you are in this hard moment? Next, connect with common humanity, meaning think about how anyone in this situation, who has been through what you have been through, would feel the same way. You are not alone in this. Finally, offer yourself a kindness. This could be a gentle or reassuring word or a compassionate touch (hug yourself!). Sometimes, it’s easier to take SCB with a guide. We’ve created a free 5 minute guided audio here.
